Everyone who works at a computer screen for more than one hour per day is legally entitled to a Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessment. But I’m a firm believer that this should look at office environment in addition to an individual’s posture.
I offer a service whereby I visit offices to check to see how employees are using their bodies for the job they’re required to do.
For the individual, it makes perfect health sense since computer use can cause postural problems as well as back, neck and shoulder pain. Leave those ‘niggles’ unchecked and they can develop into conditions such as RSI, Repetitive Strain Injury. It’s vital to pay attention to early warning signs to avoid long-term damage. Unfortunately few people do heed those early signals and that has lead to the prevalence of muscoskeletal disorders in the UK.
For the company it makes sounds economic sense. In the UK 4.9 million working days are lost to employees having time off because of back pain.
I maintain a DSE assessment needs to be much more than a checklist of measurements and boxes to tick. I have a trained eye which will spot how employees could be correcting the way they bend, sit, stand – and as a result of that, their health will be assured and the company’s workforce in work – not taking time off for back, neck or shoulder pain.
It’s a matter of taking time to understand the employees’ job requirements and helping the company provide as safe an office environment as possible.
I can offer a standalone assessment or assessment with report.
